Swimming

Swimming - in a pool, butterfly stroke
Swimming - in a pool, butterfly stroke
1 / 1

We do not organise swimming, and we do not need to: the water is under 500 metres from the door. Las Canteras is sheltered by a natural rock barrier called La Barra, which turns most of the beach into a calm lagoon and is why the city has a serious year-round swimming culture. Water temperature runs roughly 19 to 24 °C through the year, so a good part of the season needs no wetsuit. Locals swim laps parallel to the shore all morning, and you will not be alone out there in January.

If you want lanes and a clock, the nearest option is the municipal indoor pool Piscina León y Castillo, 300 metres away: 25 metres, seven lanes, covered, open on weekdays and closed at weekends. For most people staying here, that plus the ocean covers it.

There are also swimming clubs with 50-metre Olympic pools in the city, among them the Metropole Swimming Club by Parque Romano and the municipal Julio Navarro pool in Parque Doramas. Both are worth knowing about if you swim seriously - but they work on membership or registration rather than a walk-in day ticket, so plan ahead rather than turning up with a towel. Check the flag before swimming past La Barra: beyond the barrier it is genuinely open ocean.

One stretch is worth knowing about: roughly 660 metres from the HQ there are free lockers and private showers underneath the paseo. Ask us if you need a padlock for one of the lockers.
