Calima - Sahara Dust Days

Las Palmas during a Calima - the city skyline barely visible through dense Saharan dust haze

Calima is a weather event where strong southeasterly winds carry fine sand and dust from the Sahara across the Atlantic to the Canary Islands. The sky turns orange or milky white, visibility drops, and air quality deteriorates - sometimes severely. During a strong Calima, dust concentrations (PM10) can reach 500–900 µg/m³, far above the 25 µg/m³ considered safe for daily exposure.

What to do during Calima

  • Close all windows and outside doors as soon as dust levels rise.

  • Minimize time outdoors - especially avoid intense cardio outside.

  • If you do go outside, an FFP2 mask helps reduce dust inhalation.

  • Most Calima events pass within one to two days - keep an eye on the forecast.

Air Purifiers - One at Each Location

Each of our three locations - U32 Headquarter, P21 Outpost, and J48 Penthouse - has its own air purifier. The most effective approach during Calima: ventilate briefly with windows fully open for a few minutes, close everything to the outside, then use the purifier to clean the air inside.

For exact instructions on how to use the purifier in your room - including the special case for the Acro Atrium - please read Rule 13 in the House Rules.
